The St. Phoebe School for Deacons is a partnership between the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, and the Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership at Church Divinity School of the Pacific. The key contacts for the St. Phoebe School include the following people:
The Reverend Dr. Sarah Kye Price
Local Formation Director, the St. Phoebe School
Sarah is a bivocational priest and professor in the Diocese of Virginia. As local formation director, she focuses on liturgical, practical and spiritual preparation for diaconal ministry and serves as a “bridge” to CDSP’s academic programs. In addition to her work with the St. Phoebe School, she is Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty Development at VCU School of Social Work and Priest Associate at St. Mark’s Richmond. Sarah is a 2018 graduate of the low-residency MDiv program at Church Divinity School of the Pacific.

Vocational Development Minister, the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia
As a layperson managing the largest ordination process in the Episcopal Church, Ed seeks to provide a healthy trajectory from discernment to deployment (and beyond) for clergy. Ed sees his ministry as being primarily about connection and clearing the way for seekers, postulants and clergy to be in the right place at the right time for their formation.
Ed’s hope for the Church is to increase the number of vocational deacons and priests ordained each year, and to strengthen and adapt theological and practical formation for the benefit of all orders of ministry.

The Venerable Bill Bumgarner
Archdeacon, the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia
As Archdeacon, Bill works with the Bishop and the Canon for Transition and Pastoral Development in the development and support of the diaconate in the diocese, including the deployment of current deacons. Bill was ordained a deacon in 2006, in the first class of deacons formed in the Diocese of Southwestern VA. Until retiring recently as a VP of Sales of Smyth Companies, Bill balanced work with a wide spectrum of diaconal ministry. He was appointed Archdeacon in June 2019.
